FM3 Turbo kit 1990-1993 (1.6L) minus ECU/fuel
Includes:
-Garrett T28 turbo
Rebuilt less than 5,000 miles ago at
Limit Engineering. Works great, no problems.
Journal bearing, oil and water cooled.
Turbine: 0.49 A/R ratio, 79 trim, 53.0mm wheel
diameter
Compressor: 0.48 A/R ratio
-FM intercooler w/ new black powder coating
-All air pipes (air filter to turbo to IC to thottlebody) w/ new black powder
coating
-FM divorced 2.5" downpipe
-Installation and tuning instruction manual
Kit was also upgraded with:
-FM's all metal Blow off valve
-Tial 35mm external wastegate (with 9psi spring)
This turbo system runs GREAT and is in very good
condition. Several items have new powder coating and many new
nuts/bolts are provided. I'm only selling
it because I have finally been bitten by the V8 bug and have started an
engine conversion. With this turbo kit, I have produced 240hp/228 ft-lbs at
the wheels running about 15psi on a local dyno (see dyno
page). Very fun and VERY fast. Driven daily and sleeps
quietly on the road until you put your foot down... then HOLD ON! It
has very good streetable characteristics. This kit was sold by Flyin
Miata years ago called the "FM3" kit. This is very similar
to the "FM2" kit except that it utilizes an external wastegate
(which allows for better top end performance under higher boost
conditions). Other than that, it is basically the same kit.
This was marketed by Flyin Miata, but several of the parts came from BEGI.
The smaller turbine and compressor A/R ratios allow for fast spool-up yet
it maintains strong torque all the way to redline. The turbo was
rebuilt less than 5000 miles ago for minor bearing issue and still has
very little freeplay (like new). This kit in is truly in great
condition. I don't like buying junk on the internet from others, so
I don't sell junk either unless I fully disclose what you're
buying.
Also included are replacement silicone air pipe
hoses. The orange ones in the pictures are also included as
spares. The blue hoses are more durable and I had intended to swap
them out but never got around to it. I went ahead and put the nicer
blue ones on the pipes along with new hose clamps when I removed the
system from my car. A couple of the air pipes had some chipped
powder coating and a little blue paint overspray from when my car was
repainted, so I had the pipes and intercooler media blasted and recoated
with fresh powder coating. They look brand new. There are two
new turbo gaskets and several packets of new nuts/washers. The turbo
water jacket has two new silicone water lines. The fresh parts and
powder coating should make installation a little easier and look cleaner
when done.
As for any negative things to mention, there are two
things. The downpipe and exhaust manifold had been originally
ceramic coated mostly for cosmetic reasons. Some of the coating has
flaked off of the downpipe which now reveals some surface rust. This
is normal; the kit normally comes with a painted downpipe. The paint
normally burns off and the pipe takes on surface rust. On this
downpipe, most of the flaking is down low where the pipe is near the
ground so it is not that visible from the engine bay. The other
negative thing to report is a small crack in the exhaust manifold.
This crack is at the flange where the wastegate joins the manifold.
The crack is minor and has been there for years without growing. I
do not anticipate this being a problem; it was probably caused by internal
stresses that are now relieved with repeated thermal cycles. There
is no exhaust soot blowing from the crack.
The wastegate originally included with the FM3 kit
was made by BEGI. After repeated problems with the gate sticking, I
replaced it with a Tial wastegate, which is what BEGI uses now. It
has performed flawlessly ever since. The wastegate has a 9psi spring
currently installed and I utilized a Greddy boost controller to reach
boost levels above 9psi (I usually ran at 13-15psi max daily). The
spring inside the wastegate can be easily changed to provide different
levels of baseline boost, however it is optimal if you use a boost
controller for levels from 9-15psi.
The main K&N air filter was replaced not long
ago and is in very good condition. A valve cover breather K&N
filter is also included.
Overall this kit is in great condition. You
won't be disappointed with the performance, condition and overall
appearance of the kit.
Over $4000 invested...
Asking $1700 for
everything.
